Kid Romance

Dear The Other Disco

since ur label and blog seems really gender aware, under Kid Romance is… one boy, one girl, two trannies. A fun game: can u tell which is which and for bonus points: Trannies from what to what?

Kid Romance is one boy, one girl, two trannies. Don’t bother guessing which – from lucy, nicky, jimmy, and dd -is which. It’s as difficult to guess as it is to unpick their complex-pop. Recordings squirm under reverb, vocals record over one another, serious lyrics mix with fuzzy punk. Kid Romance are a balanced combination of it all.

“We’re like a spray painted message on a park bench in north carolina woods” they say. It suits*. There is something fragile but defiant about Kid Romance’s record – as if every track could be wiped away with the wave of a feedback spraycan but will rile people anyway. It’s just not meant to be there.

Kid Romance’s favourite three bands ever are “Germs, The Raincoats, um Nirvana”. There are elements of them all in there. The Raincoats in baggy cardigans? No, they are not adverse to a bit of glamour. “we r the future of pop!’ they say. “long live michael jackson!” Kid Romance are The Raincoats in sparkly jackets.

They have a “new ultra cool 7” of fuck punx b/w i use electricity and a cassette on Captured Tracks.

* Lucy from Kid Romance told me that the grafitti is also REAL. She explains

“The name KID ROmance is actually a spray painted message on a park bench. I went to this boarding school when i was younger and we weren’t always allowed off campus so we would sneek out like little shits and drink and smoke cigs and do stuff we werent spose to.There were a few spots we would go to: The majic parking lot, the treehouse, the snowpile( an ice dump behind an ice factory). But there was one that we would go to all the time. It was a bench in the middle of the woods with no path leading there so no one ever bothered us. A long time before we started going there, someone had spraypainted the words “kid romance” on the bench. So thats what we called the spot. I always liked the name.”
